garlands (works in progress)

With his new series, Caldwell is “investigating” the idea of a still life composition by moving flowers around on the scanner’s surface as its light bar slowly moves across it, capturing slices of images 1/8th of an inch at a time, making for a faceted, high-definition version of a blooming dreamscape.
“It gives me an opportunity to move the still life, to reconstitute it in a very active manner, in contrast to the idea of ‘still life’ being dead nature,” he says. Caldwell is particularly intrigued with the opportunity to use daylight from above and the light bar from below while simultaneously documenting the passage of time.
